Another Foodie Sunday

Scott had off today. I was so excited to spend the day with him. I did our laundry.

Brooke's embarrassed  by our "under things." She asked me why they're on our blog. I really couldn't avoid them. It's not like we're airing our dirty laundry. They're clean.

 Scott made breakfast.

Simple pancakes with some diced apples.

Scott's on a pancake addiction lately.

If I'm off on a Sunday, it's the only way to go. Though I do miss waffles. Brooke wanted omelets; I'm just not an eggy dude.

We used up the syrup that were Chelsea's favors at the wedding.

Then we headed to the farmers market. I suggested we go since there aren't many weeks left until it closes for the winter.

As usual the crowds were huge and the parking lots were packed. This part of the market is technically not the farmers market, but the privately owned annex.

We skipped over to the market proper. Many of the farmers are from the large Hmong and Laotian communities in the Twin Cities.

I was very excited about how much food we could still get, being that its the end of September.

For the first time in my memory one grower had peanuts. They were soft and fresh. We attempted to roast them in the shell at a low heat, but that didn't seem to do the job. Only the outsides were crunchy. Later this week we shelled them and roasted them in the oven. They finally tasted like peanuts.

I had only brought one bag and we filled it up right away.

All the growers insist on giving you a bag either way.

It was kids day at the annex so Pooh came by.

My bike was a bit heavy with all our food.

We walked a ways down Glenwood Avenue, which is the southern border of North Minneapolis. If we walked far enough we would have ended up at our wedding venue.

When we got home our key wasn't turning to unlock our door.

We happened to have one window open for Peanut, so I unscrewed the storm. Otherwise I would've had to cut the screen.

I had to climb in through the window.

The kiddos came to help us as well as steal my camera.

We figured out that there was nothing wrong with the lock. It was stuck because our garbage bag that was on knob was too heavy. My fault.

I tried to get a good shot of the food.

This weeks market finds were red and gold potatoes, carrots, kale, dino kale, cilantro, leeks, swiss chard, parsnips, brussel sprouts, bok choy, red onions, tomatillos, jalapenos, garlic, radishes and, my favorite of all, locally grown PEANUTS!

 Scott heated up lunch.

We used to eat nachos all the time in our punk house days.

Then he got started making salsa with the tomatillos and jalapenos we bought.

We made the nachos from our leftover fajitas.

Then we did some cleaning. I'm so happy I found someone that will clean with me.

Amidst our afternoon of cooking Brooke finally put the laundry away. When we first moved into North I was worried about leaving the house with our laundry hanging. To this day we've never had a problem.

Then Scott finished the salsa.

And started prepping dinner.

I made a bechamel and ragu for the layers of our authentic Italian lasagna.

While making dinner I accidentally broke a light fixture we had planned to put up  in the breakfast nook. Scott was heartbroken.

I bought it for Valentine's Day! RIP awesome plastic light fixture from the '70s.

We finished prepping dinner before heading out again.

So we changed caterers again. A chef I know offered to charge us less for the same amount of food we were getting at La Loma. We met up with him, but didn't take any photos.

We ended up getting more food and paying a bit more, but its definitely of better quality. Plus we get to help out someone we know. Ironically we drove past one of the caterers they force you into at our ideal venue, the Theodore Wirth Chalet.

Then we went to Target to get some of the last wedding items.

I also wanted to get a curtain rod. We've had the curtains since Easter, so it was about time we hung them. Especially with our impending guests.

Although it didn't rain at all we came out to a rainbow.

Scott and kitty hung out on the couch while dinner baked in the oven.

Homemade lasagna from The Silver Spoon for Children. It's so great to be making real meals again.

She means that we're not winging it like we did much of the summer.

I ended the night with what Scott thinks is my favorite thing. He always complains I don't do much around the house, but how can I if spend all my free time doing dishes?

Point, set, match. Brooke.

Six Months, More Like Six Years

Approaching the 11th hour of this Sunday we finally rolled out of bed. Brooke and I made a night out of our six month since being married. In a way we could be celebrating six plus years together. I met the little lady above in February 2006. Now we garden together. We had a lovely night indeed: dinner at Red Stag and drinks at Aster Cafe.  I went outside to show Brooke where our new boulevard tree was going to be planted. We found a love letter in our bushes. Brooke couldn't read it, so we let it dry on one of the radiators.  The first page was mostly apologizing for not writing and then the second page turned sour with lots of swear words.  We drove downtown to eat brunch. We parked across from this rare small pre-1950s building that has somehow survived in downtown Minneapolis's ongoing urban renewal. We decided to eat at La Belle Crepe since I picked up this for our post-wedding breakfast back on that October day. This creperie is...

A Solo Visit to Fergus Falls' Dairlyand and Back Home with the Fam

I had to travel to St. Croix Falls over in Wisconsin and then all the way across Minnesota in Fergus Falls to shoot a couple of hotels. After my second hotel shoot I stopped by Dairyland before heading home. This was the correct choice. I even got a little tour of the place from the owner. Pretty cool to see the old radio switch board from when they were a proper drive-in.

Katrina and Dennis's Big Day!

I don't shoot nearly enough weddings . I'm just not good at the whole marketing aspect.   The one's I end up photographing are, like this one, family or through the grapevine. This time around I'm shooting my big (little) sister's wedding to Dennis, a man I respect immensely. I got to hang out with him a few times in Chicago and then a whole week in San Jose. I really looked forward to the bachelor party with the guys and wasn't disappointed. While the women got ready and after I helped setup the venue I came back to hang with the dudes and ostensibly get dressed. As you can see above we drank some beer and booze and shot the shit. My big brother, Colin, was the officiant and was really excited for his parking pass that was included with his ordination packet. All the women involved in the wedding gathered into Katie's room to get our hair done. Olive was just there to entertain us. And the bride is ready. At some point...
