A Quiet Memorial Day Weekend 2026

This year would be a small crowd for Memorial Weekend. My siblings all had other plans I guess.

I was a bit bummed even if I do love quiet weekends at the cottage.

Since we couldn't leave until the kids were out of school, I had us pick up sandwiches to eat on the way. Mine wasn't too bad.

Trader Joe's is always a bit weird. Everything has to be unique. Like why did the kids ham and cheese sandwiches have a log of butter?

When we arrived I gave my mom her remaining gifts from Japan as a Mother's day gift.

Grandpa's pancakes are the best.

Theo has been excited to see how far along the upstairs was done.

It's getting there.

Cool and gloomy, just like you imagine Memorial Day Weekend to be, I guess.

Rummage saleing this year was a whole family affair. I found a cute luggage rack and Meadow got a painting of plates with tea cups.

Oh, and she was really excited to find a dictionary in the free pile.

She's very serious about her new dictionary.

I'm pretty sure we mostly waited for Meadow to pick a bunch of clothing.

We had to peak in the old Pine Isle, which will soon be reopening as, um, Opi's, Old Pine Isle. Will be great to have a bar back on the Three Lakes chain.

The gals went to the thrift store while the guys went to the Man Cave.

Meadow was having luck at the thrift store.

Theo and I went over to Lick-A-Dee Splitz for some ice cream since we'd be waiting for a while.

We stopped at one more sale where Meadow scored a bag of clothes for $10.

Theo brought along his new remote control boat.

All the dudes had to take turns, this little wake boat rules.

Then we drove along with grandpa to pick up a neighbor's pontoon trailer. Once we get the pontoon in for the season it gets to stay in the lake on the boat lift.

The kids braved the chilly waters.

Back inside, Meadow crafted while Theo and I played dominos.

Last weekend my dad was up for "guy's weekend" where a lot of the caught fish was left behind.

Don't mind if we have a little fish fry.

Along with kiddy cocktails.

The next morning I attempted to make a Finish oven pancake.

I used our new Detroit pizza pan and it worked out a lot better than our old ceramic pans.

Works great for Detroit-style pizza, too. Obviously.

The sun was finally out, but we still raced the RC boat around the dock.

Grandpa picked up an electric trolling motor for the boat Meadow claimed at the end of last summer. I guess it's her boat now.

We'll have to have Meadow get her boat license this summer.

Grandpa and Meadow took it out for a spin around the lake.

Theo was also in his element. He'd stay in the water all day.

You know I did my annual deep clean of the car. Theo helped for a short bit.

With the pontoon in the water, we had to go for a ride.

Theo had to slap the bridge into Big Stone Lake.

Aww...

Look at these cuties getting along for a minute.

We made a pitstop at the island on Fourmile Lake.

I wanted to fly my drone on the other end of the chain.

I love the view looking out towards Sam Campbell Trail and the Nicollet National Forest.

Theo has the best time out on the water. Little goof.

Even Brooke went for a dip while I made dinner.

The kids convinced me to join them.

I made teriyaki chicken on the griddle.

I asked Meadow to take me out on a boat ride before sunset.

Awww....

The sky was really cool with the storm rolling in.

It doesn't get more beautiful than this.

Before heading home we went bobber fishing with grandpa.

Of course grandpa caught the most fish.

The kids also had some luck.

As we do, we stopped at Pizza Ranch in Rhinelander for lupper.

That place is underrated.

The Sunday Circular

We stayed out late the night before for our friend Jose's birthday party. This time Scott had more to drink than me. So we slept in. Apparently Peanut also had to much too drink. I woke up to this mess. Of course he's licking the plastic bag in this picture. He loves licking bags -- reminds him of his alley cat days.    Scott's hangover comfort food is pancakes and syrup, that would be last thing for me. I tried to cheer him up with emoticon mini pancakes.    My stomach was just not having it. This might be the first time I've left pancakes on my plate. Ever.  Off to work I went, hungover. Damn you Best Buy! While he went to his job, I worked on getting the chile-braised pork shoulder ( from the latest Bon Appetit ) ready for our epic meal .  I got a strawberry plant from the back of someone's pickup truck while Scott was in California. Thanks to Emma for finding it on freecycle . He planted it for me...

Six Months, More Like Six Years

Approaching the 11th hour of this Sunday we finally rolled out of bed. Brooke and I made a night out of our six month since being married. In a way we could be celebrating six plus years together. I met the little lady above in February 2006. Now we garden together. We had a lovely night indeed: dinner at Red Stag and drinks at Aster Cafe.  I went outside to show Brooke where our new boulevard tree was going to be planted. We found a love letter in our bushes. Brooke couldn't read it, so we let it dry on one of the radiators.  The first page was mostly apologizing for not writing and then the second page turned sour with lots of swear words.  We drove downtown to eat brunch. We parked across from this rare small pre-1950s building that has somehow survived in downtown Minneapolis's ongoing urban renewal. We decided to eat at La Belle Crepe since I picked up this for our post-wedding breakfast back on that October day. This creperie is...

Sushi Sunday Returns

Today I woke up before Scott and surprised him by making big pancakes. I was so excited, but I had to take a quick shower first. He didn't know I was making breakfast and woke up too late. He had to scarf it down before heading to work. I'm not going to complain that Scott had to work on a Sunday again. Yea it sucks, but I need to be more thankful that he has a job. It may not be the best he's had or the worst and the pay isn't phenomenal, but life isn't always fair. Instead of dwelling on the things I don't like I need to be more happy about the things in life that are great.  After he left I spent time on-and-off working on this puzzle. It's a lot easier to see the many colors when the suns out. I think I found about 3 more pieces.  Then I ordered more seeds online . Last year we figured we had enough, but then we realized we really want to grow kale and chard and popcorn. I know it's a little early to be getting excited abo...
