Duluth December Weekend: Boubville Ain't Bentleyville, But Why Not Go to Both

This year we decided to check out Daniel's avant garde Christmas light display: Boubville

We've seen the set up but never in action.

Get a crowd and it takes on a totally different vibe. Plus I don't think we've ever seen all the lights and displays on at the same time.

There was even a ball pit with hidden prizes.

A few of the other kids activities for the first night were canceled due to frigid temps.

The winter beach was magical.

A great use of the boob lights.

My favorite display was the interactive light display.

Meadow even donated some art.

The Ghosts of Dinners past was super rad. Like a manger scene where the people disappeared.

Loved the burn barrels to stay warm.

They were very necessary on this night.

Hey I recognize that doll with the pink tights.

This was one of the displays we'd seen in the past.

In Blake and Daniel's garage some local teenage bands were rocking out.

Not a bad first night of Boubville.

While Brooke worked at the Super 8 the kids and I killed some time shopping in Lincoln Park.

Theo wanted to beat up the giant grizzly at Frost River.

After a few more stores we decided to go up the hill to the Pizza Ranch Fun Zone.

Pizza buffet and an arcade? The kids must have been pumped.

Besides the time we lost after we lost our arcade card in a game, we had a blast. The games are super affordable.

So serious when he plays games.

And when you get done you can get more food from the buffet!

We explored the mall and Theo had to escort Meadow out when she couldn't get enough of Hot Topic.

After I was done with work we parked at Blake's house and walked down to Bentleyville. I thought that being a Friday night it would have been packed. I guess it was too cold for most people.

I think we've been to too many Bentleyville's at this point. The kids didn't seem too excited.

They try to add some new things every year, like this swing photo op.

The updated fire pits were tad bit smokey.

Then we walked all the way back up the hill to Blake's.

Theo can't handle the hills of Duluth.

The next night of Boubville was more lively.

From what I hear Saturday was even more packed.

Theo and I shared a turkey leg smoked by Daniel's dad.

The vibes were even better tonight.

The Ghosts of Christmas Dinner also included a Bundt mold.

Theo and Meadow lived in the ball pit all night.

The birthing canal is a recurring display.

Hey Blake's zines were even available in the gift shop.

I thought I might as well get a drone shot for Daniel so he can get some big grants next year.

The DJ took a break from the B.I.A. Spacebox when I stopped by.

The kids hid in the house and played on my iPad while we enjoyed some music.

And cabaret.

The dancing elf was my favorite.

Until next time Boubville.

The next morning as we headed back to Minneapolis we had to stop at our favorite buffet. At $20 a person now we almost backed out.

When we were inline a regular paid for all our meals! Holy cow. And they don't make you wear gloves anymore! I'm back on the Black Bear buffet bandwagon.

Yardwork, Ikea and Pumpkins

My new parents-in-law got us a dehydrator for the wedding. Knowing we were going to be cleaning up the garden and going to farmer's market, we took a gander at our millionth kitchen device during breakfast.   Scott added granola to his oatmeal.  The oatmeal was rather bland, just the way Brooke likes it.   Scott was actually cleaning up so I had to take a quick photo of him as proof.  Scott told me he was, "putting a blanket down for Peanut," while singing. During the winter months peanut needs a warm place to peer through the window. Seeing as it was nearly November, I setup his blanket for him. Seeing as the farmers market season is dwindling down, we headed to the market...once again. The close proximity to the cities central farmer's market has to be one of the best assets of living in NoMi. We were both amazed by the bounty of produce still on sale. We quickly filled up our first bag and took it back to the car....

Back to the BWCA - Red Rock to American Point via Voyageur Canoe Outfitters

The  kickoff to our Boundary Waters trip started with a cookout in Duluth.   Right along the rocky shores of east Duluth. Burgers and playing in Lake Superior, what could be better for this little bub. We camped at Jay Cooke state park for the night, then drove back to Duluth for some Duluth Grill breakfast. Had we known that we were meeting with Blake and Daniel on the far side of Duluth, we'd have stayed in Two Harbors. But I guess it worked out. Duluth Grill is still delicious. Meadow is now in her, "Why are you taking photos of me" phase. We had some time before getting to Voyageur Canoe Outfitters so stopped in Grand Marais.

Little Bohemia Lodge and Labor Day at the Three Lakes Cottage: 2025 Edition

We happened to be driving through Manitowish Waters so figured this was finally my chance to go to Little Bohemia Lodge . Brooke's wanted to go here forever. So why not? Even if you arrive when the restaurant opens, expect to wait. Better yet, make a reservation if you plan on going. Rookie mistake on our part. But I guess it could be worse than hanging at their old school bar with some brewskis and Shirley Temples. There seemed to be a lot of open tables. Sounded like they were understaffed.  Most had went back to school for the season. I did not expect the famed bullet holes to be right next to the tables. There were holes everywhere.
