Little Bohemia Lodge and Labor Day at the Three Lakes Cottage: 2025 Edition

We happened to be driving through Manitowish Waters so figured this was finally my chance to go to Little Bohemia Lodge.

Brooke's wanted to go here forever. So why not?

Even if you arrive when the restaurant opens, expect to wait. Better yet, make a reservation if you plan on going.

Rookie mistake on our part.

But I guess it could be worse than hanging at their old school bar with some brewskis and Shirley Temples.

There seemed to be a lot of open tables. Sounded like they were understaffed.

Most had went back to school for the season.

I did not expect the famed bullet holes to be right next to the tables. There were holes everywhere.

We started with cheese curds.

Fish fries for the parents and burgers for the kids. Theo apparently doesn't like charbroiled burgers, but does like them for our grill? Make it make sense.

It poured while we were eating and had just cleared up when it was time to leave.

It was nice to be the first ones at the cottage as it gave us a chance to clean all of our gear and clothes from our BWCA trip.

There will be no swimming today.

Like seriously? Go way algae.

At least we could fish, I guess.

We took a break from cleaning and fishing to take a trip downtown.

Mind Chimes rules.

The new addition is looking so good with the windows in.

With so many of us going in and out of the house, my dad added a magnetic screen to the doorway.

I made fajitas for the first night. This griddle is going to get a lot of use.

This Blackstone sure is handy.

Mike made pancakes in the morning.

Still not too old to play on the treehouse.

They're growing up so quick, but they're still little kids in my eyes.

We asked grandpa to bring back the treehouse ladder and cleaned it up a bit. Too many cobwebs for the kids.

We told them they could sleep in there tonight like their uncle Blake used to do.

If you can't play in the lake, might as well play in Blake's pond.

Can we make every meal on the Blackstone this weekend?

Snacks, snacks, snacks, CRUNCH!

You know we had to hit up some rummage sales.

We went to the flea market in Eagle River to only find out they charge entry. But at least kids were free. Theo didn't have to jump the fence after all.

Chelsea couldn't carry Viola and her backpack at the same time so I volunteered carrying Viola. It's been so long since I carried a baby on my back.

There were some good finds. Or at least good photo ops.

We almost bought a remote control boat for Theo but the seller wasn't sure if it worked or not.

That's a good year.

So much nostalgia.

Meadow found a seller who had a bunch of anime pins.

I got Theo some caramel apple popcorn since he was sad about the remote control boat.

Afterwards we stopped at the Hiker Box. I love the compact size of my 50 degree sleeping bag, I just need one for colder nights. This one looked nice.

I could also use a better pillow.

I guess Theo and Blake love trying on the alien-looking sunglasses.

I stood back as Mike and Dan took down a dead tree.

I was worried it was going to fall back on the house, but I guess Mike has this figured out. I'm never trying this out.

Not the Blackstone but still cooking outdoors.

I ended up making my grilled pizza this summer after all.

It's always a big hit, but I've got to remember the Romenesko's have small appetites.

We like to fill up on snacks.

All the kids went out on their kayaks at sunset.

The algae blooms were much better away from the shore.

I joined too.

The dogs were getting FOMO.

Good morning, lake.

Aw breakfast was indoors this morning, didn't quite make it.

We'd been on quite the roll with the griddle.

We decided to go canoe the Pine River in the nearby Headwaters Wilderness.

This canoe is not really meant for 3 people. Any small movements caused the canoe to tip.

We went one way as far as we could before turning around and exploring the other direction.

We ran into a huge beaver dam and decided it was best not to risk getting out of the canoe.

Later, the kids were begging Blake to make another quest for them. Dan suggested they make a quest for Blake this time. They did pretty good, evening stumping him a few times.

Boat ride time!

Grandpa was already teaching Viola how to steer the pontoon.

Theo had had enough of the shenanigans and took a nap.

Ruthie too.

More sunset paddles to the middle of the lake.

Theo used Meadow's kayak while she used the row boat.

And then they all raced back.

Greek bowls by Dan.

What? We are actually sitting around the fire?

Blake or Mike made french toast out on the griddle. I can't remember who.

I asked Chelsea if she could trim Meadow's bangs before she starts school tomorrow.

Theo wanted a hair trim too.

I guess Theo wants a kayak now.

Goodbye, Summer. It's been fun.

Yardwork, Ikea and Pumpkins

My new parents-in-law got us a dehydrator for the wedding. Knowing we were going to be cleaning up the garden and going to farmer's market, we took a gander at our millionth kitchen device during breakfast.   Scott added granola to his oatmeal.  The oatmeal was rather bland, just the way Brooke likes it.   Scott was actually cleaning up so I had to take a quick photo of him as proof.  Scott told me he was, "putting a blanket down for Peanut," while singing. During the winter months peanut needs a warm place to peer through the window. Seeing as it was nearly November, I setup his blanket for him. Seeing as the farmers market season is dwindling down, we headed to the market...once again. The close proximity to the cities central farmer's market has to be one of the best assets of living in NoMi. We were both amazed by the bounty of produce still on sale. We quickly filled up our first bag and took it back to the car....

Northwoods NYE 2025: A Long Drive to Marty's Place North and Winter Fun on Dog Lake

Christmas time is tricky for me because it's the busiest time for me at work. I took a half day on New Years Eve and then we headed straight up north. The kids and I should've just went up days earlier, but instead I played video games in the guest room all week. Was so happy to see this place even though I was not feeling great. Of course this little guy brought another bug home with him for winter break. Ah, the good place. There's nothing better than cottage in winter. The cottage was looking beautiful in the snow. Of course you have to trudge out onto to the lake to take it all in. The addition really looks like it's always been there.  Meadow always looking cute. Oh, we arrived on New Year's Eve, which is super rare. I need to get some glitz and glammer for next year. The ladies are showing us up. This year we went to Marty's Place North . We stopped here last year for drinks and appetizers when we were skating the Glide in nearby Boulder Junction. We had...

Backcountry Camping with Kids in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Day 1  Back in May I stumbled upon Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I had no idea there was a National Park in North Dakota and that it was the northern end of the Badlands. Usually our summer vacations coincide with Scott's work trips. Since he didn't have any this summer I thought we should take advantage of actually taking a vacation. What, my workcations are always classics? I suppose a second real vacation this year wouldn't hurt. We definitely have more time than normal. As long as we took Covid-19  precautions and avoided people. We finally settled on a time to go. Blake joined us so we borrowed our dad's van so we could ride together. Scott had just driven from Michigan the day before. Blake had met my parents in Wisconsin to get the van and then drove from Duluth to pick us up. I offered to drive since I literally only drive twice a month.  I was still pretty tired from a long drive home. Since we were near Fergus Falls we had to stop by the abandoned state ho...
