Meadow's 12th Birthday Weekend

Our little gal was turning 12 this week. That meant a picnic in the park along Minneapolis' Minnehaha Creek.

The kids and I were in a competition of who could get to 1,000 first. They had to spend 1,000 hours outside and I had to walk 1,000 miles. To be fair the kids started January 2024 and I started January of this year.

They beat me and decided their reward was to go to Minnesota's Largest Candy Store.

I'm trying to loose weight, Brooklyn.

I always walk around with Brooke and the kids knowing I just want the homemade treats on the way out.

We also picked up some crazy snacks for the upcoming 4th weekend up north.

They had changed a few of their murals since we were here last.

We forgot to get the lemon candy apparently.

Meadow wanted to go to her favorite pizza place for her birthday dinner. Sadly, Black Sheep only has one location left in the North Loop.

At least it's the original location. Though I did love their Eat Street location.

After dinner we walked through the North Loop over to the playground down by the Mississippi. The kids weren't interested when we got there.

Meadow has been less interested in playgrounds and Theo won't play without her.

Late night cake decorating for mama. Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting for our favorite gal.

We were then awoken in the middle of the night to tornado sirens.

Meadow requested Japanese pancakes for breakfast.

What do you mean by that Brooke?

Holy cow Meadow really grew in the last year!

Meadow wanted to celebrate her birthday near trees and water, preferably a pond. We settled on Minnehaha Creek and prepared food for a picnic.

Meadow was texting her friends but it turned out they couldn't make it. All her friends were overbooked by their parents. I was sad for her, but she took it in stride.

She requested sandwiches with fruit, veggies and chips.

The last week looked like it would rain today, but we lucked out.

Happy Birthday, lil' gal. You're getting so grown up!

Brooke made a really, really good cake.

Must have been if we ate half the cake just the four of us.

I think she liked it.

Back at home it was present time. Theo got her the full Hunger Games series.

I got her a bag for her ice skates and a tiered earring stand.

I picked up a pair of pink Converse All Stars.

I also picked her up a surprise Dubai chocolate bar. She is special after all.

Now all her earrings are nicely organized.

I can't remember who we were chatting with, but it must've been my family?

We let Meadow chose what she wanted to do the rest of the day and she picked the MOA. First stop, Barnes and Noble.

Are we sure she's old enough for this one?

Probably not but it's her favorite.

Theo really wanted this Mario shirt from BoxLunch.

While the girls shopped, Theo and I went on some rides.

And checked out the lego store.

Happy 12th Birthday Meadow!

Six Months, More Like Six Years

Approaching the 11th hour of this Sunday we finally rolled out of bed. Brooke and I made a night out of our six month since being married. In a way we could be celebrating six plus years together. I met the little lady above in February 2006. Now we garden together. We had a lovely night indeed: dinner at Red Stag and drinks at Aster Cafe.  I went outside to show Brooke where our new boulevard tree was going to be planted. We found a love letter in our bushes. Brooke couldn't read it, so we let it dry on one of the radiators.  The first page was mostly apologizing for not writing and then the second page turned sour with lots of swear words.  We drove downtown to eat brunch. We parked across from this rare small pre-1950s building that has somehow survived in downtown Minneapolis's ongoing urban renewal. We decided to eat at La Belle Crepe since I picked up this for our post-wedding breakfast back on that October day. This creperie is...

Honeymoon: Duluth, Minnesota is Not Flooded. Long Live Long-Pong.

When the waitress asked for Blake's ID and he told her he was underage we were kicked out of the Thirsty Pagan. To not miss out on our favorite pizza and beer (and we had a coupon to use up) we ordered food to go. While waiting for our food we walked around the great, but sad city of Superior, Wisc. Heading directly out the door and towards the industrial waterfront this Charlie Brown block was plopped amongst the former industry.

A Few Thoughts to Pass the Time

I'm sitting at the library, my new hang out besides random coffee shops. Class isn't for another 2 hours and I've finished all my homework. There's a guy running across holding his pants up and rush hour is just setting in. I never realized how weird Minnesotians actually are until I saw American Idol last night. They were doing auditions in Minneapolis, which Randy liked to call Minnehopeless. I thought it was just the culinary students that we're weird at my school, but no it's the whole state. The majority of the people that I know here are not actually from Minnesota, only one that truely is seems ok to me. Maybe I'm just like them but I don't want to admit it. School is alright. It keeps me busy. I like that some classes only have 10 students. Everyone in my Nutrition class eats healthy and reads the ingredient list but me. At least I get to take home everything I make in my baking class. Summer seems so far away. I need to find a place to live befo...
