Memorial Day in Three Lakes in the Year 2025

Once Scott was done with work and the kids were home from school we headed to the cottage for Memorial Day Weekend.

Two quick shoots and we were on our way. Along the way stopped by Lake Country Pizza for the first time in probably a decade or more in Turtle Lake.

You know the kids got the spaghetti and meatball pizza.

We hadn't seen little Viola since Thanksgiving. She's grown up so much and already almost walking.

She loves walking to her brother Nolan.

Today was also Blake's 33rd birthday. We missed his birthday dinner, but not the birthday balloons.

Good to see that the Lake is still there.

Memorial Day weekend means rummage sales.

The Wisconsites at one house clearly didn't like their Minnesota gift.

Theo got a ball cap just like papa's.

Jumping jack break.

We almost got a bike for Theo at the Man Cave.

It was nabbed while I looked in the shed.

The fun thing about rummage sales is going down streets I've never been to before.

One was back in a small trailer park behind Downtown Three Lakes.

Then we checked out the St Theresa's thrift shop.

Should have bought this for our kitchen.

Why can't they be just a bit more adventurous? Meadow's been getting so picky. That's not how this is supposed to work.

It's been fun to have another baby in the family again.

Too bad Brooke, this dude's been snipped.

Don't worry, I'm good. I'm done with interrupted sleep.

Blake led one of his famed scavenger hunts around the cottage woods.

I gave mom her belated Mother's Day gift. A strawberry hummingbird feeder from the glass shop in Duluth.

Maybe in a few years she'll put it up.

Chelsea picked up a ball ice cream maker. The kids had fun kicking it around.

Blake and his scavenger hunts for the kids, there's always more than one.

Dan has become the top chef in the family over the past few years. For the Gostisha's meal he made homemade birria tacos.

Time for my annual car clean out. I haven't deep cleaned this car yet.

The kids were up to no good.

So, I took them on a paddle boat ride.

All the typical fun was had.

I decided to get my fishing license again and went fishing with Grandpa Mike, Harvey and Dan.

The Gostisha's were catching fish left and right.

I did get this bass at least!

Harvey got a muskie, which Dan and I have never been so lucky to catch.

Good to be back out fishing on the most beautiful chain of lakes in the world.

Meanwhile Meadow and I went rollerblading. We didn't make it far as the road isn't as smooth as I thought.

Meadow was in need of a haircut. Chelsea to the rescue. Though somehow she convinced her not to trim her bangs...

I made bibimbap for dinner. My new go-to recipe.

This worked out well for a crowd. Everyone could add their own toppings.

My dad added some new lanterns to our family sign. We had to check it out.

We took a pic, but a few folks were missing.

I thought Viola would be in her stranger danger era, but she didn't mind being passed around.

It was time to put away everything for the weekend, but first they went a really long boat ride.

The kids talked us into getting ice cream. All of us actually had on shoes this time.

With our bigger car we don't use the roof box as much. We had more stickers that we needed to add.

We have to document each side to see which stickers end up getting lost to the highway.

Until next time, Three Lakes.

Money DOES Buy Happiness

I got a wake up call when I realized all the loans I took out for school actually went for school. I'm only working part-time at Menards now which is just enough to pay the rent and bills. My phase of being poor wasn't really a phase, but actually permanent. I took out another loan so I would have extra cash to feed me (being poor is the best diet). I won't see that money for another month which means no time off for a Christmas break. I have to wait a few more days to find out if I even get Christmas Eve off. This is by far the sadest Christmas ever for me. It doesn't even feel like Christmas. Only one house on my street put lights up, I'm used to everyone in my whole town putting up lights. Plus we don't have a tree or any decorations and we haven't had any snow yet. I did get a Christmas present from Menards, 55 dollars in Menards money and this. In two weeks someone I love and care about very deeply will be in London for 5 months and I only get to see hi...

Backcountry Camping with Kids in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Day 1  Back in May I stumbled upon Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I had no idea there was a National Park in North Dakota and that it was the northern end of the Badlands. Usually our summer vacations coincide with Scott's work trips. Since he didn't have any this summer I thought we should take advantage of actually taking a vacation. What, my workcations are always classics? I suppose a second real vacation this year wouldn't hurt. We definitely have more time than normal. As long as we took Covid-19  precautions and avoided people. We finally settled on a time to go. Blake joined us so we borrowed our dad's van so we could ride together. Scott had just driven from Michigan the day before. Blake had met my parents in Wisconsin to get the van and then drove from Duluth to pick us up. I offered to drive since I literally only drive twice a month.  I was still pretty tired from a long drive home. Since we were near Fergus Falls we had to stop by the abandoned state ho...

Mayday in Minneapolis 2025

It's Mayday, the greatest day of the year in Minneapolis. I warned Theo that it was going to be hot today but he still insisted on wearing his high wool socks.  Can you blame him. They look so cool. We biked over like we always do. So much easier these days living just across the highway from the South Side.   We left later than planned and didn't have our bikes ready so by the time we arrived there were no more spots on the curb to sit. We hung out in the shade until we heard the Battletrain coming.       It'll be here soon. Or will it? Every 30 feet this giant cardboard castle did a little show. That would explain the long hold up for the parade to start.
