Scott's 28th Birthday Extravaganza

I decided to have a birthday party at our place since Meadow can't go out and we have friends with kids. For some reason I thought making pizza for a bunch of friends was a great idea.

After making one successful batch of dough the recently repaired Kitchenaid mixer went kaput again. I had to knead the rest by hand.

While Scott worked on the pizza dough I started baking the birthday boys cake. This year he requested chocolate cake with berry filling.

Because...why not?

Meadow requested a mesh thingy with banana to hold her over while we baked.

Somewhere in here our hand mixer also broke, so I went out and bought a new one.

I was worried I had over-baked it, but Scott assured me it would be fine.

On Scott's actual birthday he requested crepes for breakfast.

I am no match to Scott's crepe making skills. Mine were more like tortillas.

They were basically exactly like mine except I use more butter and higher heat.

Meadow had banana for breakfast. She thought she was supposed to eat the peel too.

After a few minutes she sort of figured out what to do.

Then I had to make the frosting and decorate the cake.

I always crumb coat my cakes first. Then let it chill in the fridge so when I finish frosting I don't get crumbs mixed in.

Scott left to meet up with other Google photographers. Meadow was taking a nap and I was downstairs cleaning. I heard a thud and assumed it was Peanut. A little while later I heard a noise again. Peanut was asleep in the living room. It sounded like it came from the basement. Then it sounded like someone was walking around down there.

I got really freaked out and called Scott to ask when he was coming home and told him how I was afraid someone was in the basement.

I told her to go down and check. I knew nothing was wrong.

I couldn't do it. Instead I locked the door to the basement and ran upstairs to be by Meadow. When I came in I found her like this. It was her I heard all along. Usually she talks to herself when she wakes up, but today she was quiet as a mouse.

You know except for the whole knocking down mirrors thing.

Then I finished decorating the cake.

I used frozen berries to decorate the top.

This turned out so nice. What a wife!

 Then everyone started to arrive.

I was surprised that so many people showed up. It was a bit overwhelming directing a make shift cook staff, but it turned out pretty well.

Everyone each took a turn at making their own pizza.

I felt kind of sick after not eating much during the day and having chai tea. Scott and caffeine don't mix. Everyone else seemed to enjoy the pizza.

We didn't have 28 candles so we had to use tea lights.

Everyone loved the crust I made. I have to admit I'm still looking for a great sauce recipe.

Olive was really excited for cake.

Meadow surprised everyone with her new specs.

People never believe they are real.

My Geek Squad dudes Danny, Davin, Chris and Bryan all showed up. I love these nerds.

At some point Blake showed up from his adventures in Peoria. Yes, that Peoria.

 My cake turned out alright.

Alright? It was the hit of the night.

After everyone went on their merry way, Tyler, Emma, Olive, June and Ali stuck around.

Ali even helped me put dishes away and clean up. I love this man.

Blake had recently seen Brittany who sent with him Meadow's belated Christmas gift: a handmade tree puzzle that took three adults to put together.

She also got matching hair clips.

Cute guys. Cute.

Everyone else headed out, but Blake stayed for the night. He got to watch Meadow drink from a glass.

In the morning Blake had to go to do something about something in Duluth. Meadow and I were sad to see the young chap leave.

I think this turned out to be a killer birthday party, but maybe next time we'll just order in.

Looks like you had a wonderful 28th birthday. The pizza and cake looked delicious. Wow, Meadow drinking from a cup. What a big girl.

Chicago Chrismukkah + Michigander Xmas

Before heading out on our trip we let the kids open their Christmas gifts from us. A knitted sweater for Theo and a kitty dress for Meadow (I fixed the straps for her) both made by me. I wanna a sweater. Scott got them new compact sleeping bags. We all got smaller sleeping bags this year and we'll now have a lot more room in our car. This year we had talked about hosting my family at the cottage. Then meeting up in Milwaukee, then meeting in Chicago. But in the end we made stops in Chicago and Lowell this Christmas. We left on a Sunday which was nice to have a few days to prepare. On the way down to Chicago we stopped at our favorite roadside restaurant, Foster Cheese Haus. We had plans to break up our drives so we didn't have to rush like we normally do. We had made it just before the cheese haus was set to close for the winter. Just not enough folks stop here in winter and snowmobile season is becoming shorter and shorter this far so...

A 50s Era Map Guides Us on a Twin Cities Day Trip in the Fiala's Giant SUV

Another week and another house full of crazy Fiala kids. One day June asked if he could have a half-sandwich/half-bagel. We obliged.

Duluth Workcation: June 2022 Edition

Had another shoot up in Duluth. This time an overnight stay was included. So I brought the family along. Then we just stayed the rest of the weekend at Blake's.   As soon as we both returned home earlier in the week we had to get our attic prepped. We were getting all the knob and tube replaced so insulation could go in.         Back in Duluth we opted for the room with the lake view. The kids wanted to go swimming, but Brooke had other plans and I had to take some twilight photos. The kids and I walked around Canal Park. We made sure to wave to the webcam and then they just had fun climbing on the old anchors.   Scott had to work for most of the day so you know what we did. Yes, that's right, a Hiking Club Trail. Today took us to Tettegouche State Park.  We came here for my birthday when Meadow was little. We had never been on the lake side.  What a view.  We had a picnic lunch and had plans to go see some waterfalls, but the kids wer...
