Food Daze

Remember why we needed a freezer? We did order one from Best Buy that week, but it was on backorder until July 21. We still didn't get it and now they are saying it could be August 28. You have no idea how hard it is to go through the whole summer not being able to make our own ice cream or popsicles. Buying ice cream is nothing compared to making homemade. Please cross your fingers with us in hopes we get it soon.

Since Scott had to be to work at 11. We got up early and drove to the farmers market.

We had to get there fast, so we couldn't bike.

As Brooke noted a few posts back, it seems like more and more people are coming to the Sunday market. It can be pretty chaotic. It took us nearly ten minutes to park.
There was so much to choose from this time around.

It's a lot more fun to go to the market this time of year. It's really amazing what diverse crops grow in Minnesota's short summer. Makes one wish we didn't waste so much fertile land for endless waves of corn and soy.

We also got a few plants on sale.

Not sure what you call the plant up top, but it was rad and now it's in our front yard.

Scott spotted this cute couple playing music on the side. When he took their photo the woman insisted I get in for a photo too. Awesome.

I gave them a tip before I took a photo. I thank them for their music and in return I get one sweet photo and another awkward one. I think that's a great exchange.

Since we got up and left right away we didn't have time for breakfast. Even though we were there at 10 there was a line for hotdogs. We went with baked goods from Cocoa and Fig instead. The cream cheese brioche was my favorite. Since it was "late" morning they were half off.

We ended up with 4 bags of produce.

We headed back up Penn on the way to the BBY. I wish we could spend all our Sundays together, but work comes before play. Hopefully by next summer I'll have enough wedding, editorial and reality photography clients that I won't have to work on the sabbath. (BTW we'd totally love to photograph and/or cater your next shindig.)

I love this time of year when everything is in season. We got quite the bounty this week. Mixed greens, brussel sprouts, bok choy, kale, carrots, green bell peppers, red chard, blueberries, cabbage, broccoli, black raspberries, fennel, cauliflower, radishes, purple beans and raspberries.

The plants we bought are to fill in our front planter.

We chopped down the lettuce this week. The hot weather causes it to get too bitter tasting.

Yay Thai chili's.

And look! Finally carrots are growing.

And a pumpkin.

I did some cleaning while Scott was at work. Washed out all the garbage cans, did lots of laundry and cleaned the bathrooms.

For lunch I had another one of our random vegetable stir-fries with berries from the market.

Then Blake showed up.

And then seconds after, Scott.

We needed tortillas for dinner. Instead of going out to the coop we went to Cub. The one disadvantage of our neighborhood is that the nearest coop is 4 miles away. I miss when we lived down the street from one.

We used to walk to the Wedge from time to time. With Brooke's new bike rack and cages we could pick up everything. As it turns out, the Johnson's going-away present has tamped down on our need for bi-weekly grocery shopping.
They don't have a half-bad selection at the West Broadway Cub, especially when it comes to international foods. On the other hand, the industrial size beef taco filling didn't look appetizing.

We did find some frozen wonton wraps. Brooke and I typically make them by hand, but this season has become the summer of semi-homemade.

I started cooking dinner. My hands were busy cutting so my lovely brother fed me chips and salsa.

There totally cool like that.

While we ate beef and potato burritos, Blake had bean ones. As you can see, we still haven't removed the wallpaper residue. It's been one of those summers.

We bought sherbert at the store. Did you know Kemps has a factory in our neighborhood? Not that I enjoy their factory farm dairy products.

In fact their headquarters are in St. Paul. That almost makes it local!

I think the plant up top is yarrow?
Thanks Alex. Now I actually know what I planted.
We love the vibe here on Sundays-and you took home a lovely haul. See you again, soon-and next time you can get your tortillas here.

Scott spelled "They're" wrong.
Why go to the farmer's market when I can get a tasty fresh meal at Arby's courtesy of the coupons at the bottom of your blog? MMMMM...Industrial roast beef!!!

Six Months, More Like Six Years

Approaching the 11th hour of this Sunday we finally rolled out of bed. Brooke and I made a night out of our six month since being married. In a way we could be celebrating six plus years together. I met the little lady above in February 2006. Now we garden together. We had a lovely night indeed: dinner at Red Stag and drinks at Aster Cafe.  I went outside to show Brooke where our new boulevard tree was going to be planted. We found a love letter in our bushes. Brooke couldn't read it, so we let it dry on one of the radiators.  The first page was mostly apologizing for not writing and then the second page turned sour with lots of swear words.  We drove downtown to eat brunch. We parked across from this rare small pre-1950s building that has somehow survived in downtown Minneapolis's ongoing urban renewal. We decided to eat at La Belle Crepe since I picked up this for our post-wedding breakfast back on that October day. This creperie is...

Katrina and Dennis's Big Day!

I don't shoot nearly enough weddings . I'm just not good at the whole marketing aspect.   The one's I end up photographing are, like this one, family or through the grapevine. This time around I'm shooting my big (little) sister's wedding to Dennis, a man I respect immensely. I got to hang out with him a few times in Chicago and then a whole week in San Jose. I really looked forward to the bachelor party with the guys and wasn't disappointed. While the women got ready and after I helped setup the venue I came back to hang with the dudes and ostensibly get dressed. As you can see above we drank some beer and booze and shot the shit. My big brother, Colin, was the officiant and was really excited for his parking pass that was included with his ordination packet. All the women involved in the wedding gathered into Katie's room to get our hair done. Olive was just there to entertain us. And the bride is ready. At some point...

A Solo Visit to Fergus Falls' Dairlyand and Back Home with the Fam

I had to travel to St. Croix Falls over in Wisconsin and then all the way across Minnesota in Fergus Falls to shoot a couple of hotels. After my second hotel shoot I stopped by Dairyland before heading home. This was the correct choice. I even got a little tour of the place from the owner. Pretty cool to see the old radio switch board from when they were a proper drive-in.
