A Day at Fort Snelling

This past Thursday we decided to spend a day at Fort Snelling State Park. Blake had come down the night before and supposedly somebody he knew said, "It's the coolest place in Minneapolis."

Brooke claimed she'd never been here before, but later on admitted that she had. We thought a good way to explore the old fort site was with some geocaching. Brooke's sister Brittany and her husband Jeff introduced us to this GPS led scavenger hunt a few years back.

I have ridden my bike past it, but had never seen any of the buildings up close.

The first cache we were looking for was either on the banks of the Mississippi or across the river. The next one was easy to find.

Obligotary shot of hipsters resting post-super long hill. They should've got a bike with gears.

Gears or no gears, hills still suck.

Once we went down to the valley below Fort Snelling-proper we geoed another cache. Of course Blake found this one too.

It turns out that there aren't any caches on big island that make up most of the park. What we did find was a big cage in the forest.

Brooke and Blake went inside. Blake's face is priceless.

I must be embarrassing him in front of his friends.

For some reason my wife really wanted to walk on the thin ice.

Blake and I have robot arms.

Since there were no more caches we just walked the big loop around the island.

Everybody found a tree to hide in except for me.

Say cheese!

When we were walking around we noticed that all the trees were a lighter color for the first six feet. The flooding last year must have been intense. It seems that the Minnesota River (to the right) floods every year. The lack of snow fall this winter kept most of this beach bare.

The second half of our trek wasn't that interesting, but we did spot a pack of deer on the lonely island.  At this point I realized I was out of shape. That can only mean one thing: bike rides.

I have to say that your arms really are very funny looking in that picture. :)
What exactly is geocaching?

Amanda--It's like a scavanger hunt game that uses latitude and longitutde points. Scott downloaded an app for his phone, but my sister uses a handheld gps. It's fun to play. You follow a compass to see where to go and then you have to find a hidden capsule. YOu can play this game almost anywhere in the world. I know there's one at the little park by my parents house.

Yardwork, Ikea and Pumpkins

My new parents-in-law got us a dehydrator for the wedding. Knowing we were going to be cleaning up the garden and going to farmer's market, we took a gander at our millionth kitchen device during breakfast.   Scott added granola to his oatmeal.  The oatmeal was rather bland, just the way Brooke likes it.   Scott was actually cleaning up so I had to take a quick photo of him as proof.  Scott told me he was, "putting a blanket down for Peanut," while singing. During the winter months peanut needs a warm place to peer through the window. Seeing as it was nearly November, I setup his blanket for him. Seeing as the farmers market season is dwindling down, we headed to the market...once again. The close proximity to the cities central farmer's market has to be one of the best assets of living in NoMi. We were both amazed by the bounty of produce still on sale. We quickly filled up our first bag and took it back to the car....

Tuska Brothers' Packers Weekend or How We Ate Our Way Through Green Bay

My rad brother hooked us up with a pair of Packers tickets at Lambeau. We've been talking about doing this for years now and it was finally happening! A Tuska Brothers' Packers Weekend. We met up at the bar at Kroll's West where he was already noshing on a sausage and black olive pizza. Are we even brothers? Doesn't he know that sausage always goes with green bell peppers or spinach? We got the cheapest hotel room in town at the Bay Motel and Family Restaurant . It looks straight out of the 50s and I don't think its trying to be cute. To be honest the place is just nice. After settling in we got beer over at Badger State Brewing. Our friend Jordan , who we just met up with a few weeks back in Seattle, designed some of their newest cans. So we had to stop by. That's so cool. After a couple of beers we drove up the bay to Club Chalet in Benderville for an authentic Wisconsin Supper Club experience.

Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie on the 4th of July

As you can see I wasn't exactly happy to be working on a Sunday, but Best Buy hasn't exactly given me another option.    I hate when he has to work on my only day off. Wait my first two days off since New Years. Yeah, it's summer and we like to enjoy our "weekends," but life isn't always fair. Because I woke up pretty late I ate Brooke's famous strawberry-rhubarb pie for breakfast. Brooke always makes at least one straw-barb pie every year. On Saturday night she finished up the pie she'd started a few days back.   She's perfected the art of crust making after many failed attempts. It's all about finding the right recipe. She's also got a nifty cutter from Nordic Ware that makes the lattice work much easier. I'd rate this as the best one she's made to date. My breakfast was not dessert. I had oatmeal with blueberries. Somehow basil has been growing like weeds and has taken over two plant...
