Loco for Local

For the month of August Scott and I are taking a local challenge. We want to reduce our carbon footprint as well as help out our economy. Why August? Honestly we thought it would be the easiest. We figured we'd get the most out of our garden this month and there would be lots more in season at the farmers market. There are two exceptions and they are, my sister's wedding is this month and I'm making her cake. Unfortunately sugar can't be grown in Minnesota. I know there are other alternatives like honey, but I really don't think I should experiment when 200 people are going to be eating it. The other exception is getting our car fixed. A foreign car means foreign parts. 

We do have some rules/guidelines for going local. 

1. All food bought must be from the Midwest. That means no chocolate, bananas, or tea.

2. If we choose to go out to eat the restaurant must have locally sourced food items (this does not include Chipotle) and/or be owned by someone who actually lives here.

3. When buying non food related items they must be made in the USA and also bought from a store where the owner actually works.

4. All beer must be from Minnesota or Wisconsin. And thankfully our state has it's own vodka. 

Think we can do it? I think so.

We had originally planned on taking the bullet train down from Tokyo to Kyoto for a day or two. While being epically fast, it was a bit spendy for the four of us.  After talking to Brooke's coworker we settled on a two day trip to Nikko and its World Heritage Sites to break up our week in Tokyo. This turned out to be an amazing decision. The town is teaming with beauty from ancient shrines to epic waterfalls and some of the best meals we had on our trip. Kyoto didn't seem all that appealing to me when I started researching which location to go to. I too am glad we chose to head north to Nikko.  When we booked our Tobu Nikko Spacia X tickets I upgraded to the premium seats thinking that we'd be sitting facing one another. A Smoky Weekend at the Cottage and a Stop at Ladysmith's Northland Mardi Gras

This summer we decided to go to the cottage any weekend we had nothing else going on. This week, due to fires in the Boundary Waters and Canada, the air quality was pretty terrible. We debated if we should still go, but it looked like it would clear up by Saturday. So we took the chance. And by terrible, we mean the worst air quality we'd ever seen. Along the way we decided to stop at John and Heidi's Happy Daze . We've passed this place probably 100 times. It was about time to stop by. I ordered the prime rib sandwich special.  Yummy. The sandwich that is. Everybody's food was really good, but Brooke's was the star of the show.  I want to get back here asap. Now if only this pesky smoke would go away.

Backcountry Camping with Kids in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Day 1  Back in May I stumbled upon Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I had no idea there was a National Park in North Dakota and that it was the northern end of the Badlands. Usually our summer vacations coincide with Scott's work trips. Since he didn't have any this summer I thought we should take advantage of actually taking a vacation. What, my workcations are always classics? I suppose a second real vacation this year wouldn't hurt. We definitely have more time than normal. As long as we took Covid-19  precautions and avoided people. We finally settled on a time to go. Blake joined us so we borrowed our dad's van so we could ride together.
