2024 Year in Review

This year was more house projects and adventures.

January 

Scott's birthday at the cottage.

Looking good at 37. Think I may have put on 10 pounds since then. That's life.

February - the snowiest winter ever

Brooke don't mind, I'm doing the snow blowing. If we've learned anything a year later, maybe somewhere between a deluge and no snow would be nice.

March - backpack camping at Tettegouche

The hike in with a very heavy sled? Not my favorite. Snowshoeing up to Mount Baldy? Priceless.

April - we refinished the 3rd floor

Rather I finished rehabbing the attic. Only one gas leak near catastrophe and it's looking great.

May - we got all new furniture in our house

I became a Facebook Marketplace antique sleuth.

June - canoe camping on the Cloquet River.

Paddling along the river was great. The mosquitos on shore were out of a horror film.

July - exploring our own city

I know, I know, Brooke was digging never being home, but Summer in Minneapolis is pretty great.

August - campervan west coast trip

Best vacation ever?

September - Theo started kindergarten

You'd think I'd have more time to get work and projects done, but really the house is just much quieter.

October - family M&M halloween costumes

We were a huge hit around the neighborhood.

November - ice skating at Titletown across from Lambeau Field

The start to the winter of skating.

December - wild ice skating at the cottage

No snow, no problem if it means (sorta) wild ice.

Things We Hoped to Accomplish in 2023


Brooke
1. Get 10,000 steps a day at least 20 days a month. I only missed February when I had Covid.
2. Stretch daily. I have gotten really stiff in the last few years. That's still a work in progress.
3. I'd still like to lose 10 pounds. I seem to fluctuate within 5 pounds.
4. Visit every library in Hennepin County. We checked off a lot but still have more to go.
5. Get back into knitting and sewing. Maybe when the kids are older.


Scott
1. IDK Definitely, SMH.
2. Paint the Outside of the House. Well, I got two sides done. Also ended up with a free new roof after the only thunderstorm of the summer. A win.
3. Buy another rental property, though I'm thinking that might a 2024 goal, tbh. That'll have to wait. Need to finish all the projects in our unit first.


Meadow
1. Make another cooking video No
2. Read more Warriors books Yes
3. Swim in the deep area without a life jacket Sort of 


Theo
1. Learn to ride a bike.  He's got the balance down, still needs to work on pedaling and steering.
2. Ice skate without a trainer. He skates pretty confidently without one.
3. Be brave and talk to other kids. He's made so many new friends at school. Makes me so proud.


Things We Hope to Accomplish in 2024


Brooke
1. Continue with my goal of 10,000 steps for at least 20 days a month.
2. Learn to drive the pontoon.
3. Learn to steer a canoe.
4. Finish our list of visiting every library in Hennepin County.
5. Get my ears repierced. 

Scott
1. Finish painting the house. I'd say paint the garage as well, but first I've got some siding to repair.
2. Get the backyard rink up and running before Thanksgiving. Not sure if I can control this.
3. 4 bike rides per week? Probably can't happen since Brooke always has to go for walks.
4. Go on at least two big camping road trips.

Meadow
1. Finish the Warrior Cat series.
2. Get a cat.
3. Play with friends a lot.
4. Swim in the deep end.


Theo
1. Learn to ride a bike.

Mayday in Minneapolis 2025

  It's Mayday, the greatest day of the year in Minneapolis. I warned Theo that it was going to be hot today but he still insisted on wearing his high wool socks.  Can you blame him. They look so cool. We biked over like we always do. So much easier these days living just across the highway from the South Side.   We left later than planned and didn't have our bikes ready so by the time we arrived there were no more spots on the curb to sit. We hung out in the shade until we heard the Battletrain coming.       It'll be here soon. Or will it? Every 30 feet this giant cardboard castle did a little show. That would explain the long hold up for the parade to start.

Backcountry Camping with Kids in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Day 1  Back in May I stumbled upon Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I had no idea there was a National Park in North Dakota and that it was the northern end of the Badlands. Usually our summer vacations coincide with Scott's work trips. Since he didn't have any this summer I thought we should take advantage of actually taking a vacation. What, my workcations are always classics? I suppose a second real vacation this year wouldn't hurt. We definitely have more time than normal. As long as we took Covid-19  precautions and avoided people. We finally settled on a time to go. Blake joined us so we borrowed our dad's van so we could ride together. Scott had just driven from Michigan the day before. Blake had met my parents in Wisconsin to get the van and then drove from Duluth to pick us up. Work Trip to Dallas

Another work trip for Scott means another Chinese buffet.  I had to try the best Chinese buffet in Dallas. It just feels like something you do in Texas. I was down in Dallas for a shoot at Parker University. Yeah, I'd also never heard of it. After the shoot and the buffet, I explored the Oak Cliff section of Dallas from L.O. Daniel to the Bishop Arts District. When I go to a sunbelt town I typically look up "most walkable neighborhood" on Reddit. Almost always your best bet in these sprawling metroplexes. Yup, definitely in Texas. I wasn't hungry at this point, but next time I'm in Dallas, I've got to eat at Taqueria El Si Hay. This place just screams, "Really good tacos, here!"
