An Appalachian Hipcamp Road Trip: Atop a WV Mountain, Rain or Shine

Next we went to a campsite above the Greenbrier State Forest.

We met our host Joshua at the bottom and followed him up the nerve wracking drive to the top.

You can tell I was focusing intently as I forced my little Honda Insight up the steep incline.

We survived. Although the weather was misty and a little chilly.

We took the short walk up to our campsite to set up camp.

Meadow doesn't always like wearing backpacks, but I love when she's willing to hike in with her sleeping bag.

We'd picked up some take out Mexican in a town on the road in. Yuengling and some Mexican classics. It just seemed right.

After dinner we explored the area. The camp host, Joshua mentioned there were old logging trails we could take along the property.

This site is called Mountaintop Solitude. We really did feel all alone up here atop West Virginia.

We saw these bug nests on a lot of the trees.

One of the paths brought us down to a creek.

She insisted on pulling me along.

When we found the creek Meadow was happy to play hockey scotch again

This area reminded me of High Cliff in Wisconsin.

Spring was just starting up here.

The sun didn't peak out again, but that was just fine with us.

Joshua gave us some recommendations for shops in town, but the drive up the mountain kept us in place.

We retired to our tent early and read books and other things.

Lewisburg From Atop Greenbrier State Forest

Before bed I saw that nearby Lewisburg was glowing off in the distance.

Day 5

The ride back down the mountain was easier than going up.

You could say it was kind of fun.

While we were waiting for Joshua and his family I explored the hiking trails in the state forest. I like that there were signs of suggested exercises.

We then decided to have our breakfast in the picnic area.

Meadow helped with the pancakes until she realized there was a playground.

After breakfast I wanted to stop in nearby Sulfur Springs to see the Greenbrier Resort. It's been here since 1778! I would have loved to go inside, but we were a little muddy from our stay in the mountain.

Work Trip: Scott Goes to Florida

As I mentioned in the last post, I had a job down in Florida at the tail end of the week. Daytona Beach to be precise. I proposed the whole family tag along, but they did not like the idea of Florida in the Summer. Anyways, after my shoot I checked Ormond Beach just to the north of Daytona. Theo is allergic to the sun and I knew he would hate going. If there wasn't four lanes of busy traffic, this town would be great.

My new parents-in-law got us a dehydrator for the wedding. Knowing we were going to be cleaning up the garden and going to farmer's market, we took a gander at our millionth kitchen device during breakfast. Scott added granola to his oatmeal. The oatmeal was rather bland, just the way Brooke likes it. Scott was actually cleaning up so I had to take a quick photo of him as proof. Scott told me he was, "putting a blanket down for Peanut," while singing. During the winter months peanut needs a warm place to peer through the window. Seeing as it was nearly November, I setup his blanket for him. Seeing as the farmers market season is dwindling down, we headed to the market...once again. The close proximity to the cities central farmer's market has to be one of the best assets of living in NoMi. We were both amazed by the bounty of produce still on sale. We quickly filled up our first bag and took it back to the car....

Chicago Chrismukkah + Michigander Xmas

Before heading out on our trip we let the kids open their Christmas gifts from us. A knitted sweater for Theo and a kitty dress for Meadow (I fixed the straps for her) both made by me. I wanna a sweater. Scott got them new compact sleeping bags. We all got smaller sleeping bags this year and we'll now have a lot more room in our car. This year we had talked about hosting my family at the cottage. Then meeting up in Milwaukee, then meeting in Chicago. But in the end we made stops in Chicago and Lowell this Christmas. We left on a Sunday which was nice to have a few days to prepare. On the way down to Chicago we stopped at our favorite roadside restaurant, Foster Cheese Haus. We had plans to break up our drives so we didn't have to rush like we normally do. We had made it just before the cheese haus was set to close for the winter. Just not enough folks stop here in winter and snowmobile season is becoming shorter and shorter this far so...
