One More Down: We Go to Faribault's Rice County Fair

We like to go to one of the county fairs every year and thought we would try out Rice County this year.

It was gonna be warm, but with 2020 canceled, in general, we had to make it out to a fair in 2021.

We got there early afternoon and not too much was going on yet.

It was like 90 degrees.

Meadow requested snow cones first.

The 4H building is always a favorite.

We were getting hungry. I got some quality pulled pork from the pork stand and the kiddos stuck to hot dogs from a local school's stand. And lots of gatorade. It was getting hot.

Then we moved on to the animal barns. The kids found this duck shoot and couldn't get enough of it.

The kids thought it was entertaining.

Theo learned how to tell the difference between a girl and boy cows.

As in cows are girls.

Meadow played a dart game and won a clip on unicorn.

I was never allowed to play these games at fairs. Lucky kids.

Meadow and I rode the Tilt-a-Whirl after loving it at Bay Beach. I'm not sure why but this was way more intense. I even lost my phone on the ride and luckily a carney picked it up.

Theo got to join in on the fun. He loves carousels just as much as his big sister.

I finally got to go on the little kiddo ride with these two stinky pups.

We thought we were almost done when we ran into the historical societies buildings. Meadow even got to do a scavenger hunt.

First we had to find a picture in the old church.

Then she searched in the old school house. The first two buildings were structures from Rice County that were moved to the fairgrounds.

When your parents like history it's not too hard to find things.

Suddenly the fairgrounds filled up.

I can't believe none of the teenagers on this ride were screaming.

I always thought these obstacle course were a waste because you go through them so quickly but Meadow loved it.

I guess we shouldn't tell her what she likes.

We had a few tickets left and decided to go on the carousel one last time.

One last trip to the animal barns.

We were getting hungry again and not really into the fair food.

We'd went to a really good taco place in downtown Faribault last summer, Restaurante El Colibrí. This time we tried another one: Taqueria El Jefe. This one was just as good as it's nearby neighbor and had a better ambiance. Diversity is awesome, America.

Mayday in Minneapolis 2025

It's Mayday, the greatest day of the year in Minneapolis. I warned Theo that it was going to be hot today but he still insisted on wearing his high wool socks. Can you blame him. They look so cool. We biked over like we always do. So much easier these days living just across the highway from the South Side. We left later than planned and didn't have our bikes ready so by the time we arrived there were no more spots on the curb to sit. We hung out in the shade until we heard the Battletrain coming. It'll be here soon. Or will it? Every 30 feet this giant cardboard castle did a little show. That would explain the long hold up for the parade to start.

Backcountry Camping with Kids in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Day 1 Back in May I stumbled upon Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I had no idea there was a National Park in North Dakota and that it was the northern end of the Badlands. Usually our summer vacations coincide with Scott's work trips. Since he didn't have any this summer I thought we should take advantage of actually taking a vacation. What, my workcations are always classics? I suppose a second real vacation this year wouldn't hurt. We definitely have more time than normal. As long as we took Covid-19 precautions and avoided people. We finally settled on a time to go. Blake joined us so we borrowed our dad's van so we could ride together. Scott had just driven from Michigan the day before. Blake had met my parents in Wisconsin to get the van and then drove from Duluth to pick us up. Work Trip to Dallas

Another work trip for Scott means another Chinese buffet. I had to try the best Chinese buffet in Dallas. It just feels like something you do in Texas. I was down in Dallas for a shoot at Parker University. Yeah, I'd also never heard of it. After the shoot and the buffet, I explored the Oak Cliff section of Dallas from L.O. Daniel to the Bishop Arts District. When I go to a sunbelt town I typically look up "most walkable neighborhood" on Reddit. Almost always your best bet in these sprawling metroplexes. Yup, definitely in Texas. I wasn't hungry at this point, but next time I'm in Dallas, I've got to eat at Taqueria El Si Hay. This place just screams, "Really good tacos, here!"
