Pizza Farm, Another Waterfall and Two Wild and Crazy Guys Come to Minneapolis

I've been wanting to check out this pizza farm in Northfield for a few years now. They are only open on Wednesday's and every 3rd Sunday. It just never worked with our schedules to go. When deciding what to do for dinner I remembered they had just opened for the season again.

Got a phone update and didn't want to make dinner. So, Red Barn Farm seemed like a good choice. Finally Brooke checked this off her list.

They have tables but you are free to sit anywhere you want on the lawn too.

It was the perfect day to enjoy the lawn.

They supply the pizza and you have to bring everything else, including dinnerware. They do have a small shop with a couple sodas for sale, otherwise its BYOB.

The pizza is the wood fired variety that's oh-so-popular these day. Not complaining, it's good.

Scott thought the pizza was average but it was delicious.

No, I didn't think it was average. It's just run-of-the-mill these days. Would go back.

The kids were excited to run around between slices.

We also couldn't pass on the dessert pizza - rhubarb.

This was my favorite of our three pizzas.

I think Theo agreed.

Sometimes I'm a good dad,  I suppose.

The line to order pizza had gotten much longer since we'd ordered.

Since we were in the area we checked out Caron Park. There was only one other car in the parking lot when we arrived.

I wanted to check out downtown Northfield, but this was an OK second choice.

This park has, you guessed it, a waterfall!

Now that everything has bloomed and the woods are green again it felt more magical.

It really is a cool little waterfall. Not sure if the pictures did it justice.

The rest of the family crossed the stones, but I found another way around and met the kids up the creek.

"I don't want to go to a boring waterfall!" Immediately takes off shoes and has the best time.

They did not want to leave.

A few days later Blake was in town again and this time planned to stay for the weekend.

We were all very excited to have our first guests in more than a year. All of us (apart from the kids) are fully vaxxed. You should be too.

Daniel also joined us after finishing up a job in St. Cloud.

Scott says we have too many bikes, but look we had enough for our guests.

Um, I'm pretty sure I suggested keeping my road bike for guests. You wanted me to sell it. Now, I guess we'll keep it.

We biked back to Wild Mind Artisan Ales for some evening drinks.

This place was packed on Sunday and for a Friday night there was many open tables.

 "Act natural."

You guys did a good job.

Warm night rides are one of my favorite things. Even better with family and friends.

Meadow got a kid breakfast cookbook, so you know I made one of the recipes for Blake and Daniel.

After deciding what to do for the day we hopped on our bikes again and followed Minnehaha Creek.

If there's water, the kids will play.

Meadow wanted to bring home the crawfish claw that Blake and her found. We didn't want it to rot at home, so a picture it was.

She also refused to touch it with her hands.

Now we were hungry for tacos.

We took Blake and Daniel to Orale. It's definitely our favorite taco place and it ended up being our first indoor meal in forever. Thanks, vaccines.

We have only ever had Orale as takeout. Eating it fresh has taken it to the next level.

Theo agreed. Also order the queso fundido. It's so good. Or the carne asade fries. Either will do.

We were heading towards Minnehaha Falls when Meadow fell off her bike and skinned her knee pretty badly.

So Brooke towed Meadow home. And then most of the way back Meadow took over. What tough gals.

When we returned a couple of our neighbors and I worked on planting our vegetable gardens. Then the kids played outside with the neighbor girl for a good few hours.

We would have photos from our nightcap of burgers and beer at Tap Society, but Daniel was getting chippy about my photo taking. So, you'll just have trust us.

The next morning after some Bogart Doughnuts our guests left us for Ikea. As all our guests do. Before leaving I gave Blake his birthday gift, a new Shop Vac!

Mayday in Minneapolis 2025

It's Mayday, the greatest day of the year in Minneapolis. I warned Theo that it was going to be hot today but he still insisted on wearing his high wool socks.  Can you blame him. They look so cool. We biked over like we always do. So much easier these days living just across the highway from the South Side.   We left later than planned and didn't have our bikes ready so by the time we arrived there were no more spots on the curb to sit. We hung out in the shade until we heard the Battletrain coming.       It'll be here soon. Or will it? Every 30 feet this giant cardboard castle did a little show. That would explain the long hold up for the parade to start.

Backcountry Camping with Kids in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Day 1  Back in May I stumbled upon Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I had no idea there was a National Park in North Dakota and that it was the northern end of the Badlands. Usually our summer vacations coincide with Scott's work trips. Since he didn't have any this summer I thought we should take advantage of actually taking a vacation. What, my workcations are always classics? I suppose a second real vacation this year wouldn't hurt. We definitely have more time than normal. As long as we took Covid-19  precautions and avoided people. We finally settled on a time to go. Blake joined us so we borrowed our dad's van so we could ride together. Scott had just driven from Michigan the day before. Blake had met my parents in Wisconsin to get the van and then drove from Duluth to pick us up. I offered to drive since I literally only drive twice a month.  I was still pretty tired from a long drive home. Since we were near Fergus Falls we had to stop by the abandoned state ho...

Work Trip to Dallas

Another work trip for Scott means another Chinese buffet.  I had to try the best Chinese buffet in Dallas. It just feels like something you do in Texas. I was down in Dallas for a shoot at Parker University. Yeah, I'd also never heard of it. After the shoot and the buffet, I explored the Oak Cliff section of Dallas from L.O. Daniel to the Bishop Arts District. When I go to a sunbelt town I typically look up "most walkable neighborhood" on Reddit. Almost always your best bet in these sprawling metroplexes. Yup, definitely in Texas. I wasn't hungry at this point, but next time I'm in Dallas, I've got to eat at Taqueria El Si Hay. This place just screams, "Really good tacos, here!"
